Why voluptuous Lips?
Alongside gorgeous eyes, full lips can be the difference between ‘average’ and ‘amazing’.
Celebrities like Angelina Jolie and Scarlett Johansson remind us how attractive a
perfect pout can be. People can’t help but notice sensual lips.
From cosmetic point of view, aesthetically pleasing lips have:
-A well-defined border
-Well defined cupids bow and filtral columns
-Slight but cheeky upturn at the corners
-Pleasing volume to the top and bottom lips maintaining the “Phi” or ” the
Golden Ratio”
Angelina Jolie has the facial features and proportions to support big voluptuous lips.
We often get asked by patients that they want lips like her. Not everyone would look
aesthetically pleasing with such lips. The volume and shape of lips has to match
other facial features. At Dr. Javier Saldivar Office, we do not encourage patients to
seek cosmetic results that may look unnatural, disproportionate or overdone.
Lip augmentation with HA fillers
Younger patients who feel their lips are too thin or underdeveloped often turn to lip
augmentation as a means to improve how their lips look and how they feel about
themselves. Older patients with a history of cigarette smoking , recent weight loss
or genetic predisposition may develop vertical lines around their lips and sagging
mouth corners . Such patients respond well to lip augmentation as well. HA
range of fillers are ideal for non-surgical lip augmentation as a walk-in walk-out procedure.
Dermal fillers are materials that are frequently used to correct scarring, wrinkles, and other
depressions in the skin. They are often a kind of soft tissue designed in such a way that enables
injection into the skin for purposes of improving the appearance. Generally, they are made of
several types of materials of synthetic, man-made and natural categories, and they have been
developed into various standards depending on the level of usage.
The most common Dermal Filler used for lip area are Hyaluronic acid (HA)
How is the procedure performed?
Lip Augmentation procedure with HA fillers takes approximately 20 to 40 minute and is
performed under local anesthesia using extremely small needles. HA lip threads procedure
take about 30 minutes and is also performed under local anesthesia only. Gentle hand,
use of advance injecting technique and attention to detail is paramount to perform a
successful lip augmentation procedure and deliver natural looking results.
Is the procedure painful?
NO. The procedure is not painful. The filler gel has local anesthetic properties and the treated
area becomes automatically numb within first few seconds. There can be a tiny drop of blood
at the injection site but there is no bleeding as such.
Dr. Javier Saldivar use specialized injecting technique which always surprises patients who
have had their dermal fillers procedure done somewhere else before. Topical anesthesia cream,
Ice, vibrational anesthesia device and local infiltration with anesthetic agent are among
the techniques we use to make the procedure virtually pain free.
What happens after treatment?
Most patients experience minimal swelling of the lips, but this will dissipate soon. After two to
three days, you will be able to see the full effect of your lip augmentation treatment. The downtime
associated with HA threads is about 3 to 4 days where patients experience moderate swelling.
We recommend the use of ice packs after the procedure for first 24 hours.
To avoid swelling and bruising, you should:
No aspirin, Exedrin, ibuprofen, Aleve or Advil for 1 week
before and 2 days after. Tylenol is always fine.
No Vitamin E (multivitamin ok) or St. John’s Wort for 2-3 days before or after.
No exercise except for walking for 24 hours after the procedure.
If you’ve previously had cold sores around the mouth (facial herpes simplex) , the treatment might
provoke an outbreak. Be sure you have a supply of the oral tablets (prescription) Valtrex, Famvir or
acyclovir.Do not use if you are pregnant or nursing because these products have not been tested for
safety in pregnancy or nursing.
You may have swelling for 24-72 hours, especially with injections in the lips. It is recomended to avoid
planning social events for 48 hours.
After the treatment(s) some common injection-related reactions might occur, such as swelling, redness,
pain, itching, discoloration and tenderness at the injection site. These typically resolve spontaneously
within 2 to 10 days.Mild bruising or a slight blush might appear at the injection site immediately following
treatment and may last for 2-10 days.
How long do the results last for?
The result of lip fillers treatment last anywhere from 6 months to 12 months depending upon the type and
amount of dermal filler used. There are several factors that may also affect the longevity of HA
fillers including patient’s individual metabolism and his or her life style (smoking, physical
activity level etc.) Dr. Saldivar will recommend the type of filler depending upon your expectations
and budget. Lip Threads last for up to 8 months, to 1 year.
Lip enhancement can be performed at many different areas of the lips :
Philtrum ridges that go from the upper lip towards the nose – can be made more defined.
Perioral lines or fine vertical lines often due to smoking on the upper lip can be reduced.
Doctor Saldivar will carefully examine, discuss your preference and advise the best specific solution
for you. Then, the treated areas will be decided by you and the doctor. Methods of anesthesia such as
ice pack, numbing cream and Dental nerve block will be provided.
The appropriate lip filler is injected to the designed areas of lips. Doctor will then massage the areas
to create smooth, soft and natural result.
It is recommended to avoid touching or applying any make up on the treated area for 6 hours after in
order to prevent infection. Specific after care instruction will be given.
